Dr. Sheung-chi Chan, Simon, started his first organ lesson with Dr. Siu-ling Chiu when he participated in the Pipe Organ Education Series, a 6-month training program on fundamental organ playing, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in 2000. He then obtained a diploma in Organ Performance from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) in 2003 and graduated Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Organ Performance from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2005. Two years later, he was awarded the Master’s degree in Organ Performance by Texas Christian University under the guidance of Dr. Joseph Butler. In 2013, he was awarded Doctor of Musical Arts in organ performance by the University of Kansas under the guidance of Dr. Michael Bauer.
Dr. Chan was a semi-finalist in the 2011 Mikael Tariverdiev International Organ Competition in Kaliningrad, Russia, a quarter-finalist in the 2011 Canadian International Organ Competition in Montréal, Canada, a finalist in the 2012 Arthur Poister Organ Competition in Syracuse, the United States, a second-prize winner in the 2012 Fort Wayne National Organ Playing Competition in Fort Wayne, the United States, and one of the fifteen official competitors in the 2012 International Organ Competition Musashino-Tokyo in Tokyo, Japan.
Dr. Chan is now an organ instructor at the Hong Kong Baptist University, the University of Hong Kong, and a theory examiner for the ABRSM. He also teaches organ, piano, music theory and music history privately. Invited by the then conductor Dr. Michael Ryan, he is also the guest organist of the Hong Kong University Alumni Association Choir.
